Three years ago I decided to take up Triathlon and after encouragement from Penny Wilkin (Coach) I qualified in the 2015 Dambuster Tri to represent GB in my age group in the Olympic Distance to go to Chicago for the ITU Finals in September 2015.
So the journey began. From getting to the airport to arriving in Chicago and arriving home everyone was so welcoming and helpful throughout the week I was there. The Opening Ceremony was an experience and the atmosphere was great walking around in your teams with other countries. There was an athletes’ village with a lot of different stalls for the whole week.
Race day arrived some things had been changed due to bad weather the day before. On arrival at the swim start waiting for my wave to start the swim got changed because the pontoon was broken and they had to get it fixed for the elite races later the same day. The bike course was different as most of it was underground with some tight corners but the crowd were great once you were out of the tunnels – hearing ‘Go GB” I still couldn’t believe I was there. On the run course we had support the whole way round and finishing running through the same finish as the elite athletes was a fantastic experience I’ll never forget.
After the race I went with other athletes I’d met to watch the elite races and atmosphere was buzzing being actually there and not watching them on the TV. Finally the time came to head home I didn’t want to leave being part of a huge triathlon family for a week meeting new people with the same interest and doing what love I didn’t want it to end.
